wVw in May

…my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the Daffodils.
                --William Wordsworth

April 30 was another cold and dreary Spring day. A wVw writer warned me not to send any more optimistic notes anticipating the arrival of Spring--blue skies, sunshine, warmth. Now May has arrived. I am crossing my fingers and counting on that the old adage – April showers bring May flowers. Flowers are blooming. Trees are budding. Green shoots are sprouting in my garden.

New Paltz United Methodist Church hosted In Defiance: Runaways from Slavery in New York's Hudson River Valley, 1735-1831 with Susan Stessin-Cohn, April 20, as part of its Carleton Mabee Lecture Series. Following Susan's presentation, attendees were invited to step into the shoes, life experience, of a runaway by writing beginning with "My name is…." The resulting writing honored the lives of those who resisted human bondage. Using context from Susan's presentation and evidence from runaway notices, writers imagined the "story of someone's life…. [and] put a face" on human experience. I am collecting the writing and hope to make it public soon.
