In Defiance: Runaways in New York’s Hudson Valley, 1735-1831 contains hundreds of notices of people who took liberation into their own hands. Each notice presents a glimpse into a dark space. We will use our words, spoken and written, to illuminate our dark history and bring the evidence of these defiant human beings to life through story.

NEXT YEAR'S WORDS, April 19, 7:30 PM, Jewish Congregation of New Paltz Community Center

Lord, but we were a vision in the photographs year after year in our Easter gear, snakes concealed in the wild grasses… like fog pumped in from the side of the stage, at the foot of the black velour legs, sound muffled, sight misted…Just that way. Every time. Ancient. Perfect. Awful…. Do not allow ersatz reptilian creatures to fool you…“There’s a trick to it,” I said, “here I’ll show you.” “No, you don’t have to show me.  I’ll figure it out.”.. Who, we may ask, has put them here like puzzles in a book?…a persistent image frames an apparition of what remains, transient as breath.

You've just read a collage poem of April's encore readers—Tim Brennan, Susan Chute, Allison Friedman, Tana Miller, RoseMarie Navarra, Matthew J. Spireng and Caroline Wolfe—who will each read for 10 minutes. If you missed them before, hear them now! Like a grace note in our musical composition, you can add to their performances at the open mic.

Poetry, prose, the panorama of language is celebrated this month at Next Year's Words.

In this current time of resistance, you are invited to read abut one of the earliest American resistance movement - self-emancipation. We know little about the lives of enslaved people, but thanks to editors, Susan Stessin-Cohn and Ashley Hurlburt-Biagini, we have evidence of their resistance. We will use the evidence and our imaginations breath life into their stories. wallkillvalleywriters.com

  • At a time in America when we need hope the most, poet, Remica Bingham-Risher, offers us her songs of forgetfulness and of memory, songs of the closed fist and the open palm, songs of regrets and of gratitude. You are invited a reading of Bingha-Risher's latest poetry collection and a day of writing your own songs and stories for this time in America. wallkillvalleywriters.com
